Trinity CC Christmas Party

Hello,

When we wrapped up with Cross Country in the fall, we spoke of a Trinity CC team Christmas Party. We wanted to avoid the busy time around Christmas with family and travelling, but still meet as a team if possible...I think we have something worked out. Here are the details:

What: Trinity CC Christmas Party
Where: The Sommer Residence - 2161 County Road B West Roseville, MN
Date: Monday, January 5th of Project Week
Who: All Trinity 2008 CC Runners
Time: Students may arrive at 5:30pm, food will be served at 6pm and the event will end around 9pm
What To Bring: One White Elephant Gift - to re-gift something is preferred, but if you buy something, please spend no more than $5

There will be food, games and fun! The only thing we ask is that you RSVP by email to both Kim (pigeonpostusa@yahoo.com) and I (jesse.schoen@gmail.com) to let us know if you can make it so we can plan for food and also to be sure enough runners can attend.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Winter Training

Now that we are past Christmas and inching closer to the new year, I thought I would post some information on training through the winter.

This may apply whether you are planning to run in Track & Field this spring, starting early preparation for Cross Country next fall or just want to stay in shape while it's cold outside.

Twelve Tips for Winter Running:
1 - Dress warm or you will want to end the run early.
2 - Make plans to run with someone at least once a week. The theory is that 4 legs go farther than 2 legs. Winter is the hardest time to get out the door, but it's easier if you aren't the only one.
3 - When you go out into the cold, make it worthwhile…go a mile or two longer than you would if it were summer. Then you can go out less.
4 - Pre-register for a winter road race. It will give you something to plan for and keep you running between now and the race.
5 - Don't be afraid to push your limits for long runs - an endurance base is essential for even 800m and 1600m runners.
6 - Consider continuous running in the off-season of 90 minutes or more at times to experiment with the effects.
7 - In the winter, I suggest out-and-back runs. Pick a point several miles away run easy to that point and concentrate on running fast on the way back.
8 - Run into the wind in the first half of the run so the wind will be at your back at the end, especially on these out-and-back runs.
9 - Concentrate on running form to improve running economy:
…relax your shoulders, let them fall away from your ears and neck
…cup your hands like you are holding a butterfly
…your arms should be the only thing of your upper-body moving, everything else is energy wasted
…don't pump your arms (until the finish), let them swing naturally
10 - Forget your watch once in awhile - go off of how you feel.
11 - Forget the mileage once in awhile - make a decision to run for 60 minutes and then let how good you feel determine the distance.
12 - Read a running book to stay motivated - My favorites are: Once a Runner, The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner and Staying the Course.

Quotes that exemplify off-season training:
"If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don't spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it." - Priscilla Welsch

"Running is a lot like life. Only 10% of it is exciting. 90% of it is slog and drudge." - Dave Bedford
…but the work put in on the 90% can make the 10% worthwhile.

"A goal without a plan is a wish." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
What is your goal? What is your plan to achieve that goal?

"Are you the chicken or the pig in the ham & egg omelet? The chicken was involved, but the pig was committed." - Scott Christensen, Stillwater Head XC Coach
How committed are you to winter running and being at your best for track this spring?

I hope the Christmas season is treating you all well.

2008 Season Wrap-Up

Hello,

This post is long overdue, but I wanted to be sure and mention a few things...even if it is late.

Trinity Cross Country had plenty to be proud of in 2008. The Boys team lost 7 of the 10 runners from the 2007 season, yet managed to improve on their Section meet finish and regain the MCAA Conference title. The Girls team was the best in school history, shattering numerous records and finishing 7th at the Section meet.

Both teams made great steps toward an even better 2009 Cross Country season.

I wanted to highlight the team awards given at our Trinity CC banquet, because they were well-deserved and athletes and coaches voted for them. Here they are:

Most Valuable - Boys: Luke Gross
Most Dedicated - Boys: Cody Sommer
Most Improved - Boys: Jonathon Valentas
Spirit Award - Boys: JonElliott Brubaker

Most Valuable - Girls: Sarah Ennis
Most Dedicated - Girls: Rebecca Driessen
Most Improved - Girls: Maria Stephenson
Spirit Award - Girls: Carmen Quinlivan

Thanks to the parents and families of the cross country runners for hosting events, filling transportation needs, timing at meets and for your support throughout the season. We couldn't have had the success we did without you every step of the way.

Trinity CC Pizza Party

Hello,

This is just a reminder for Trinity cross country members that we do have a pizza party planned for tomorrow - Monday, October 27th at Davanni's in Eagan from 6-8pm.

We will order pizza as soon as people arrive and after supper, students can stick around for awhile or take off...whatever their time schedule allows.

This pizza party is a celebration because both the boys and girls teams had some lofty goals for the Section 4A meet and of the 10 goals we set for each team, the boys achieved 6 of them and girls reached 8...both teams had outstanding performances! The challenge was to get at least 5 of the goals for each team.

Here are directions to Davanni's from Trinity: Take 494 West to 35E South, 35E south to Cliff Road and go right (west). From Cliff Road, take a right (north) on Cliff Lake Road. Davanni's is by the Target and Cub Foods on the right side of the road. (Davanni's - 1960 Cliff Lake Road Eagan, MN)

Let me know if you have any questions.

See you tomorrow night!

-Jesse

MCAA Conference Meet Recap

The Trinity Cross Country teams battled through the mud and rain at the MCAA Conference Meet on Tuesday afternoon in Bloomington, on the school grounds of host Concordia Academy.

The girls raced first and the lady Tri-hawks had aspirations of competing for the team title.

For the first time in MCAA history it appeared that Providence Academy was vulnerable, and they would be racing without their top runner, Katherine Chambers, as she was sidelined with mono. The primary competition would come from an improved Trinity squad and a young and talented Maranatha Christian Academy team.

Maranatha runners, Laura Torgerson and Aly Kehn, rose to the challenge and led the Mustangs with a 1-2 finish in 16:22 and 16:34. Providence Academy has a talented roster and was going to fight to retain their MCAA title. Liz Chambers (16:37) and Julia Hengel (16:41) finished 3rd and 4th to lead the Lions.

Sarah Ennis (16:48) and Theresa Gross (17:06) were able to keep the Trinity hopes alive with 5th and 6th place finishes.

In the end, Maranatha proved to be too strong. Johanna Knight (7th - 17:11), Paige Speich (10th - 17:27) and Hope McCullouch (12th - 17:46) rounded out the team scoring and gave the Mustangs a 1st place finish with 32 points.

(left to right - Torgerson, Kehn, Chambers, Hengel, Ennis and Gross)

Solid performances by Rosie Simonse (8th - 17:13), Jayme Beukelman (11th - 17:43) and Nicholle Daley (13th - 17:47) secured a 2nd place finish for Providence Academy with 39 points.

Trinity finished 3rd with 56 points as Carmen Quinlivan (14th - 17:56), Rebecca Driessen (15th - 18:01) and Maria Stephenson (16th - 18:10) were the remaining Tri-hawk scoring runners.

Katie Gerdes (18th - 18:23), Katie Stephenson (20th - 18:31) and Catherine DeMarais (28th - 21:01) completed the Trinity field.

"I was pleased with the effort. I thought Sarah Ennis raced particularly well, while Katie Gerdes and Maria Stephenson ran personal bests in poor conditions," said Trinity cross country coach Jesse Schoen.

"Our girls ran well today on a wet and sloppy course, but the entire Maranatha team had a great day and Providence had some exceptional individual performances and we weren't able to finish in the mix for the team title as we had hoped."

The boys team took to the starting line as the slight favorite over Providence Academy and Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.

This race featured a dual of the top two MCAA runners from the 2007 season - Zach Haskins of Heritage Christian Academy and Luke Gross of Trinity. Haskins raced to an early lead, with Gross and Petey Simonse of Providence Academy within striking distance at the mile mark.

Over the second mile, Gross pulled away from Simonse and began to close the gap between first and second place, but Haskins was able to race tough and finish first in 17:06. Gross finished 2nd in 17:29 and Simonse held on for 3rd in 18:01.

Meadow Creek Christian, in their first season of cross country, was led by Grant Fritz with a 4th place finish in 18:28. Brad Jakobitz (5th - 18:36) of Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity and Rich Guderian (6th - 18:41) of Maranatha Christian Academy, finished as the top runner for each of their respective schools and also earned All-Conference recognition.

Cody Sommer (7th - 18:45) and JonElliott Brubaker (13th - 19:30) fueled the Trinity charge to put 3 Tri-hawk runners in the top 13.

Chris Gross (19th - 20:48) and Charlie Leighton (20th - 20:49) moved up throughout the duration of the race, picking up key positions to secure a 1st place finish for Trinity with 42 points compared to 54 for Providence Academy in 2nd place.

Joe Hrbacek (23rd - 21:40) and Jonathon Valentas (26th - 21:55) were the other varsity runners to contribute to the Trinity victory.

(left to right Valentas, Hrbacek, L. Gross, Sommer, Brubaker, C. Gross and Leighton)

"Charlie Leighton and Chris Gross were in 25th and 26th positions at the mile mark and they each moved up 6 places over the next two miles to secure the MCAA title for us today," said Schoen.

"Luke became a three-time all-conference selection for his career with a strong run and Cody Sommer earned all-conference honors by turning in his most competitive performance this season."

The 2008 MCAA Conference title was the fifth in six seasons for the Trinity Boys Cross Country program.

Running Book Library

I have an abundance of running-related books. I figured I could post a list of them, along with noting my five favorites, so if anyone on the team was interested in reading them, they could let me know.

1-Once a Runner - John L. Parker, Jr.
My all-time favorite running book. Running fiction, but very true to a college running team atmosphere and camaraderie. I usually read it once a year...a very inspiring tale for running miles after miles and the benefits of hard work.

2-Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race - Dick Beardsley, Maureen Anderson
This is basically the life story of Dick Beardsley, a home-grown Minnesota runner. It's much more than running as he goes into great detail on growing up in Minnesota, addiction to pain medicine and the long road to recovery from a severe injury on the farm.

3-Running with the Buffaloes - Chris Lear
Chris Lear follows the University of Colorado Cross Country team for the entire season. The focus is on coach Mark Wetmore and running standout Adam Goucher, but you get an inside look at how a Division I college program trains and see the struggles and hardship the team endures in the process.

4-Daniels' Running Formula - Second Edition - Jack Daniels, PhD
A book filled with great running methodology and training strategies. Daniels is known as THE coach on running and has a long resume of success at Division III school SUNY Cortland. You can seem smarter just by putting his information to use.

5-Developing a Successful Cross Country Program - Steve Telaneus, Stephenie Jordan
If you are thinking of coaching a high school cross country team, pick up this book. It has the season outline, training program, organization and details from a top running program and how they do things year in and year out. It's not ALL going to apply, but it's filled with some great information and ideas.

Here are the rest...
5K and 10K Training - Brian Clarke
Advanced Marathoning - Pete Pfitzinger, Scott Douglas
Bannister and Beyond - The Mystique of the Four-Minute Mile - Jim Denison
Better Runs - Joe Henderson

Trinity CC Spaghetti Supper

In preparation for the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, and in an effort to not wear our runners out any more than Trinity Field Day already will, we will not have CC practice on Friday, September 19th.

Instead, we will have a spaghetti supper to refuel for the meet Saturday. The Leighton family has graciously agreed to host the event.

Students may arrive at the Leighton home at 5pm, supper will be served around 5:30pm and we will have games and fairly unstructured activities following the meal. The event will end by 8pm so runners can get some rest before heading to Milaca in the morning.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Trinity CC Parents Meeting

Hello,

This Thursday, the Trinity Cross Country team has a Parents Meeting planned from 5:30-6:00pm in the Media Center.

The meeting is entirely optional, but we wanted to schedule a time for parents to come and ask any questions they might have and also to go over transportation needs for meets and planning for a couple special events we have in mind for the CC team. It is not a parents-only meeting, as students are also welcome to attend.

We chose this 5:30pm meeting time to make it easier on parents that are likely to attend the 6:00pm Athetic SignUp meeting and uniform checkout.

We hope you can join us!

Thanks,
Jesse
