2010 Season Wrap-Up

Hello,

This is long overdue, but I do want to recap some of the season ending items to share with everyone.

1) State Meet

In her first CC season, Mary Ennis qualified for the State Cross Country meet as an individual. It was encouraging to see her teammates train with Mary in the week before the meet, rally around her in preparing to race, and show up to cheer her on at the championship event. Here are the results:

15:57.0 - Mary Ennis (5:56, 6:58, 3:03) - 45th place
(153 total girls runners)

As you can see by the splits, most of the second mile was run into a stiff wind. It was a good finish to a fantastic first season of CC for Mary. Lots of success for a first-year runner, but it might only be the start of something bigger, as Mary is a very driven and motivated individual.

2) Academic All-State

I am not sure if everyone is aware of this achievement, but both the Trinity Boys and Girls Cross Country teams attained Academic All-State Gold-Level honor. This means that the varsity runners listed on the Section 4A roster averaged a GPA level of 3.75 or higher. Congratulations to both squads!

3) Team Awards

Our CC banquet seems long ago now, but on Tuesday, November 9th we recognized these runners with well-deserved awards, as voted on by coaches and students:

Boys-
Most Valuable - Charlie Leighton
Most Dedicated - JonElliott Brubaker
Most Improved - Jonathon Valentas
Spirit Award - JonElliott Brubaker

Girls-
Most Valuable - Mary Ennis
Most Dedicated - Rebecca Driessen
Most Improved - Ayana Anderson
Spirit Award - Katie Stephenson

4) Motivation for 2011 Season

I spoke about this at the end of the CC banquet, but it is worth repeating here. Summer/off-season training is the key ingredient to Trinity CC becoming a powerhouse program. Both the boys and girls teams have taken great strides and are ready for the next step. It is going to take a group of motivated and hard working individuals committed to summer training to reach lofty goals that would include qualifying for the State meet.

There is no magic method to becoming a better and faster runner, but I can give you some important advice a previous coach of mine imparted on me:

Coach: "Do you know the secret to becoming a better runner? To run. And run some more. And do it often."

Seems simple doesn't it? ...but when the cold winter months or the busy summer months roll around, it gets harder and harder to keep the routine and remember that consistency in training is the best way to improve.

5) Thanks

I want to say
thanks again to the parents and families of the cross country runners for hosting events, providing transportation, timing and working at meets, and for your support throughout the season. Our success comes from your involvement and the positive team atmosphere you help us instill in the program.

Section 4A Meet Results

Hello,

We had a much better weather than anticipated for our Section meet. We gave it all we had and the Girls team ended with a 3rd place finish, the best in school history...and the Boys team finished in 10th place.

We had Maria Stephenson running approximately 3850 meters of her race with one shoe and Charlie Leighton gutting it out a week after bronchitis. I am very proud of our total team effort today.

Congratulations to Mary Ennis on earning a berth to the State Meet with her 4th place finish!

The future is bright for Tri-Hawk cross country with no seniors on the current roster!

If you were in attendance at the Boys vs Girls race on Saturday, you are aware that there were some issues with runners that took a longer route toward the finish of the race.

The first 7 runners that came to the end of the trail with 250 meters to the finish, ended up taking another loop and ran close to 900 meters too much to the finish.

MCAA Conference Meet Results

We had great weather and an excellent competitive effort today at the conference meet.

The Boys team was able to win their 7th conference title in 8 years and the Girls team won their first conference championship in school history in style by sweeping the top 5 spots and recording a perfect score!

Because of some discrepancies with the course layout compared to last season, I remeasured the course following the race and found the boys course to be 114 meters long and the girls course to be 102m long.

I have made some conversion adjustments to give our runners more accurate times for the expected 4k and 5k distances.

Here are the results from the MCAA Conference Meet:

Feed My Starving Children Event

***Update on Feed My Starving Children Event for Friday, September 17th***

Thanks to all families for being willing to contribute to this event. It looks like we have enough adults to participate and enough drivers to get students to FMSC in Eagan after fall field day.

If you would still like to come and join us for the event, please let me know. It wouldn't hurt to have a few more adults with this large group and it should be a fun time working for a great cause.

The one change to note from the initial email is that students will need to be driven from the Lexington-Diffley complex at 2:00pm rather than Trinity School.

Here are the details:

Drivers: Jesse Schoen, Kim Kelly-Sommer
, Marion Gabl, Barb Bittner, Jeanette Leighton, Jeff Meyer

Directions:
From Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex to FMSC - turn left onto Lexington Avenue and go north for 3 miles, turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east, pass Neil Armstrong Blvd and then take the first right into the industrial area and go to the far east side of the business building straight ahead.

From FMSC to Trinity - turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east from the FMSC parking lot, take that to Dodd Road and go north (take a left), stay right on Dodd Road through the 55/149 split, turn right (east) onto O'Neill Drive, take that about one mile to Trinity.

Adult Workers: Jesse Schoen, Kim Kelly-Sommer, Andrew Nussbaum, Marion Gabl, Tom Leighton, John Berns, Jeff Meyer, Lisa Schoen, Joyce Driessen

Schedule:

1 - Arrive at the Trinity Fall Field Day site (Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex in Eagan) at 1:45pm. We will meet in the parking lot to the south of the athletic fields off Lexington Avenue.

2 - Fall Field Day ends at 2:00pm, we will drive students to the Feed My Starving Children location (990 Lone Oak Road, Suite 160 Eagan, MN).

3 - Participate in the 2:30-4:30pm training and work shift with the cross country team.

4 - Transport students back to Trinity after the event.

If fall field day is moved indoors at Trinity School, we would then transport students from Trinity to Feed My Starving Children at the same times listed.

If fall field day is cancelled, we will have a normal cross country practice at Trinity School from 3:30-5:30pm as we would not be able to make the 2:30pm start time needed to participate at Feed My Starving Children.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Hello,

I am contacting parents/families of Trinity cross country runners because our team has an exciting opportunity we can be a part of next Friday, but we will need your help to pull it off.

Next Friday, September 17th is Trinity Fall Field Day. We typically try to avoid having a strenuous practice on field day. Instead of a workout that afternoon, we have scheduled to work a shift from 2:30-4:30pm at Feed My Starving Children in Eagan.

Feed My Starving Children (http://www.fmsc.org) is an organization that prepares and packages food to be sent to children at many locations across the world, but they count on volunteer support for the packaging of materials.

We have approximately 28 cross country runners prepared to take part in this event, but we need roughly 8 adults (18+ years of age) to work alongside us as chaperones to make this possible.

If you are able and willing to help out the cross country team, here's what we would ask of you:

1 - Arrive at the Trinity Fall Field Day site (Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex in Eagan) at 1:45pm.

2 - Fall Field Day ends at 2:00pm, we would drive/transport students to the Feed My Starving Children location (990 Lone Oak Road, Suite 160 Eagan, MN).

3 - Be willing to participate in the 2:30-4:30pm training and work shift with the cross country team.

4 - Transport/drive students back to Trinity after the event.
--

Our practice time would end at 5pm and parents would pickup students at Trinity.

We won't be able to do this without your help. We will need roughly 6-8 more adults to meet the requirements for the students to participate.

Please email or call me if you can join us.

Thanks,
Jesse Schoen

Athletes will not have points subtracted according to the Trinity CC Attendance Policy until the first full day of school (Week 2 of practice), as long as students have informed coaches ahead of time of any conflicts or reasons for absence from early-season practices.

Runners all start with 15 points and are awarded additional points for 1) attendance at all organized practices and meets for that week and 2) running 6+ times over that practice week period. Points are subtracted for missed practices, depending on the circumstance and notification given to coaches for the absence.

If an athlete reaches a level of 0 points, they will miss the next meet. That athlete will then be given another 5 points. If that athlete reaches a level of 0 points again, they will be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season.
