State Meet and 2013 Season Wrap-Up

Hello,

This post is long overdue, but I wanted to share some information from the State Meet, recognize runners for team awards, and say thank you.

State Meet Results-
Girls Varsity-
14:52.3 - Becca Wilkin (5:39, 6:17, 2:56) - 3rd place
15:40.5 - Lotus Schifsky (5:55, 6:40, 3:05) - 31st place
(176 total girls runners)

It was the fourth season in a row that Trinity was participating at the State Meet with an individual or team.  It was an exciting experience to have a couple of runners perform so well at such a big meet...and fun for the rest of the team to be involved and come out to support them at State and in the training leading up to the event.

It was another great season for both the boys and girls teams. We will miss a couple of key senior leaders, but potentially return lots of talent and experience for the 2014 season with reason to be very optimistic about the future.

All-State-
By placing third at the State Meet, Becca Wilkin earned her status as an All-State runner (top 25) and State Medalist (top 10).  The highest finish ever for a Trinity runner and a fitting end to an impressive season for Becca.

Academic All-State-
Both the Trinity Boys and Girls Cross Country teams achieved the highest level of academic all-state honor - Gold Level. This means that the varsity runners listed on the Section 4A roster averaged a GPA level of 3.75 or higher. Congratulations to both squads!

Also, Lotus Schifsky and Becca Wilkin both earned individual academic all-state honors this season. If a runner is in grades 10-12, places in the top 15 at the Section meet, and has a GPA over 3.75 - they also are recognized as individual academic all-state student-athletes. Congratulations Lotus and Becca!

Team Awards-
Our CC banquet seems so long ago now, but on Saturday, November 16th we acknowledged these runners with well-deserved awards:

Boys-
Most Valuable - Henry Brink
Most Dedicated - John Michael Berns
Most Improved - Raymond Tallarini
Spirit Award - Tyler Husaby
Junior High Runner of the Year - Thomas Wilkin

Girls-
Most Valuable - Becca Wilkin
Most Dedicated - Lotus Schifsky
Most Improved - Hannah Kehl
Spirit Award - Claire Mealey
Junior High Runner of the Year - Elizabeth Neil

Motivation for 2014 Season-
Summer and off-season training is the key for any individual and team success in distance running...and it's no different at Trinity.

Many of you have had a chance to see what an improved summer of training has already done to establish a routine of running, which leads to faster times and better racing.  Let's keep the growth of this cross country program going by each doing our part to improve and have the patience to stick with training!

Every runner should evaluate their own situation and determine what the next step in their training should be to improve - it will be different for everyone based on experience, previous summer training, and age. If you have questions, please ask me...I would be glad to help.

There is no magic method to becoming a better and faster runner, but I can give you some important advice a previous coach of mine imparted on me:

Coach: "Do you know the secret to becoming a better runner? To run. And run some more. And do it often."

Seems simple doesn't it? ...but when the cold winter months or the busy summer months roll around, it gets harder and harder to be diligent in training...to keep the routine and remember that consistency in training is the best way to improve.

Thank you-
I want to say thanks again to the parents and families of the cross country runners for hosting events, providing transportation, timing and working at meets, and for your support and patience throughout the season. It can be a big challenge for coaches with such a large group of athletes, but we are always pleased with the willingness of so many to chip in and help out as needed.  Our success comes from your involvement and the positive team atmosphere you help us instill in the program.

Trinity CC - Week Twelve Schedule

Hello,

We have entered the final week of the cross country season, with Becca Wilkin and Lotus Schifsky still preparing for the State Meet.

For many runners the official cross country season has ended. Practices are optional for any runners that are not running at the State Meet, but practice is no longer a required commitment. However, it is a great way to extend your training with teammates while we still have great weather!

Here's the schedule for the upcoming week...please note the shorter practice times:

Week Twelve Schedule:
Monday, October 28th - 3:30-5:00pm at Trinity School
Tuesday, October 29th - 3:00-7:15pm - going to St. Olaf College - We will leave immediately following the school day and run the course for Saturday. If any CC runners would like to make the trip, we have a limited number of seats - please let me know as soon as possible. We also plan to eat supper in Northfield before returning to Trinity between 7:00-7:30pm.
Wednesday, October 30th - Run On Your Own - option to run at 6:45am at Trinity School
Thursday, October 31st - 3:30-4:30pm at Trinity School (practice will be short because of Halloween)
Friday, November 1st - 1:00-5:00pm - going to St. Olaf College - We will leave Trinity at 1:00pm and go to Northfield to pickup our registration packet, participate in the pre-meet practice time, and come back to Trinity by 5:00pm.  Because we will be getting out of school...only Becca Wilkin, Lotus Schifsky and Claire Mealey plan to make the trip with the coaches.  For everyone else, this is a Run On Your Own day.
Saturday, November 2nd - State Meet at St. Olaf College - Class A Girls Race at 1:00pm (Becca Wilkin, Lotus Schifsky), Class A Boys Race at 2:00pm. We plan to take a caravan from Trinity at 10:45am to be at the race site by 11:30am.  We will stay through the Class A awards ceremony that will start around 3:00pm and finish around 3:30pm.  We do plan to stop somewhere to eat on the way back from the meet on the edge of the Metro Area and bring kids from the caravan back to Trinity between 5:30-6:00pm.

We are hoping that many teammates and fans can make the trip to Northfield to cheer on Becca and Lotus and experience the races!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Swain Invitational Results

Hello,

It was 43 degrees, with a light, constant rain and 30mph winds with even stronger gusts at Enger Park golf course in Duluth on Saturday, but the Tri-Hawk runners embraced the conditions and accepted the challenge to make the most of the event.  It provided some amazing team results because of the effort by our teams.  I was very proud of our toughness, both physically and mentally, that was on display throughout this meet.

20:18.1 - Andrew Dourgarian (6:35, 7:25, 5:37, :41) - 120th place
(131 total boys varsity race runners)

The splits are very strange for a couple of reasons - 1) the 2-mile mark wasn't marked...it was an educated guess on talking to other people and coaches and 2) the final mile for the boys and half-mile for the girls was nearly all downhill to the finish.

Trinity CC - Week Seven Schedule

Hello,

As we enter Week 7 we are at the halfway point of the season already.  Let's keep our momentum in training going strong and enter October in good position for our championship season schedule.

Here's the schedule for the upcoming week:

Week Seven Schedule-
Monday, September 23rd - 3:30-5:30pm at Trinity School
Tuesday, September 24th - 3:30-5:30pm at Trinity School
Wednesday, September 25th - Run On Your Own - option to run at 6:45am at Trinity School
Thursday, September 26th - 3:30-5:30pm at Trinity School

Saturday, September 28th - 8:00-10:00am at Lebanon Hills Regional Park (Jensen Lake - 1350 Carriage Hills Drive, Eagan, MN)

The Saturday practice is a change.  We originally thought the St. Paul CAA Junior High race would be scheduled for the last Saturday in September, as it has been most years.  It was changed to Saturday, October 5th.  We are working to make accommodations to still have some Trinity junior high runners compete in that meet...more details will come soon.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Spaghetti Supper before Milaca

Hello,

The Trinity CC Spaghetti Supper at the Leighton's house following practice on Friday has become a pre-Milaca Mega Meet tradition.  It is another great way for the team to spend time together.  Thanks to the Leightons for agreeing to host again this season.

We will have a short practice (3:30-5:00pm) on Friday following school.  We will then transport students to the Leighton house just a few miles away for supper.

Parents just need to be available to pickup students from the Leighton house (...directions listed below) at 7:30pm...we will coordinate rides to the Leighton house following practice.

Event: Spaghetti Supper at Leighton's house
Date: Friday, September 21st
Time: 5:30ish-7:30pm
What to Bring: Any game that you want to play with teammates

The spaghetti supper is an optional team event, please have students let me know if they do not plan to attend.

Thanks,
Jesse

Feed My Starving Children Event

Hello,

Thanks to all families for being willing to contribute to this event. We are still interested in adding any parents that would like to come and volunteer with us after fall field day.

If you would like to come and join us for the event, please let me know. It would be great to have a few more adults with this large group and it should be a fun time working for a great cause.

One thing to note is that students will need to be driven from the Lexington-Diffley complex at 2:00pm rather than Trinity School.

Here are the details:

Drivers:
Boys Drivers - Berns (3), Dourgarian (7), Sommer (4), Kranz (4), Schoen (3)
Girls Drivers - Balsbaugh (2), Carlson (3), Kehl (5), Neil (6), Tallarini (5), Brewer (6)

Directions:
From Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex to FMSC - turn left onto Lexington Avenue and go north for 3 miles, turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east, pass Neil Armstrong Blvd and then take the first right into the industrial area and go to the far east side of the business building straight ahead.

From FMSC to Trinity - turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east from the FMSC parking lot, take that to Dodd Road and go north (take a left), stay right on Dodd Road through the 55/149 split, turn right (east) onto O'Neill Drive, take that about one mile to Trinity.

Adult Workers: Jesse Schoen, Kim Kelly-Sommer and drivers
(If you are driving for the event, we are expecting you to help be an adult chaperon for food packing...please let me know if that will not work out for you.)

Schedule:

1 - Arrive at the Trinity Fall Field Day site (Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex in Eagan) at 1:45pm. We will meet in the parking lot to the south of the athletic fields off Lexington Avenue.

2 - Fall Field Day ends at 2:00pm, we will drive students to the Feed My Starving Children location (990 Lone Oak Road, Suite 160 Eagan, MN).

3 - Participate in the 2:30-4:30pm training and work shift with the cross country team.

4 - A quick meet recap from the Private School Championships outside FMSC.

5 - Transport students back to Trinity after the meet recap...leaving FMSC at roughly 5:00pm, to be at Trinity by 5:30pm.

If fall field day is moved indoors at Trinity School, we would then transport students from Trinity to Feed My Starving Children at the same times listed.

If fall field day is cancelled, we will have a normal cross country practice at Trinity School from 3:30-5:30pm as we would not be able to make the 2:30pm start time needed to participate at Feed My Starving Children.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Food For Meets

Hello,

Here's information from assistant coach Kim Kelly-Sommer about food assignments for meets:
--
Trinity Cross Country 2013 Food for meets-

I have assigned 5 people to each meet to bring food. I have only listed the mom’s name, but dads are welcome to do the job as well.  If you have a conflict with your meet date, you can either ask someone to bring your item to the meet from your assigned group, or switch groups. Just make sure the leads know.

The person whose name is in bold print I would like to be the point person for that meet. Please call them if you have a particular item you would like to bring, otherwise they will assign you an item so that all items are covered.

I will bring a table, cold pack with mustard, and mayo, brownies and pumpkin bars to each meet.

Suggested food items to bring: Enough for 48 athletes and 3 coaches.

Bread or buns- 51 can be white and or wheat on the smaller size. Not large hamburger buns. Or bread for 51 sandwiches. Bagels will also work.

Meat- for 51 can be ham, turkey, salami, what ever. If the slices are large please feel free to cut them in half.

Vegetables- Lettuce and tomato, not everyone eats these so enough for around 30 should be good.

Fruit- One or a combo of the following,  Do not bring everything  on the list for one meet. This is a very perishable item so please do not over buy.
Seedless watermelon 2 feeds the whole team. ( I will have a cutting board and knife at each meet.)
Grapes washed and snipped.
Apples sliced.
Oranges quarted.
Banana’s cut in half or smaller. You may want to cut these as we go so we do not waste them.

I will bring a table to set food out on at the end of the meet. The coaches including myself are usually out on the course. Please feel free to set food out as kids are finishing running. We will remind kids to leave some food for runners who are finishing later in the day. I would like to ask that as parents we bring a snack for siblings, or ask that at the very least they wait until all athletes who are running that meet have finished and had a chance to eat. Then all are welcome to eat anything that is left over.

Thanks for your help in making Trinity CC a successful program!

Alumni, Family & Friends Run Results

Hello,

Thank you to all of the alumni, family and friends that came out to run with us at Trinity on Saturday morning.

An even bigger thank you goes out to everyone that helped to keep the event running even though we had a last-minute change in venue.  Many people chipped in and helped to keep it a special event that was still a success.

Both courses for the Girls 2-mile (1.94 miles) and Boys 3-mile (2.94 miles) ended up being a hair short once the official measurement was completed.  The splits for the girls mile and the boys mile and 2-mile should be accurate, but the girls second mile and the boys third mile was short.

We had some impressive performances on Saturday no matter what the distance...and it was a great competitive start to our 2013 season.
