2009 Season Wrap-Up

Hello,

The 2009 Trinity Cross Country season had some highs and lows, some of our lows in part to injury and illness, but I wanted to take some time and recap six things that stood out to show that the Tri-Hawk runners are still pushing this program in the right direction:

1) Summer Training - Coming into the first practice of the 2008 season we only had one runner begin practice with over 200 miles, this season we had four runners (JonElliott, Cody, Theresa and Carmen) over 200 miles...the most in school history.

2) Early Meet Success - On the girls side, Theresa Gross finished high in a tough field at the Nokomis Invitational, ran the fastest time ever for a Trinity Girls runner at the Red Knight Invitational and Lotus Schifsky won the Private School Championships JV race in her first official meet, as well as numerous runners improving on their 2008 times and showing great progress. On the boys side, we put four runners under 12-minutes at the Red Knight Invitational (even running shorthanded) and had a great team performance at the Private School Championships with four runners in the top 15...another Trinity Boys record.

3) Milaca Mega Meet - The Boys team won the first Cross Country Invitational title in school history at the Milaca Mega Meet by finishing 1st of 28 teams in the Class A race. The Girls team also ran well with a 7th place finish of 28 teams.

4) Conference - The Boys team also dominated the field at the MCAA Conference Meet - winning in style and showing their depth with 5 runners receiving all-conference and honorable all-conference recognition (Patrick, Charlie, Cody, JonElliott and Jonathon) as well as breaking the Trinity Boys team time record (1:31:09.0). Lotus Schifsky also received all-conference honors in her first MCAA Conference Meet with a 3rd place finish.

5) Sections - The Girls team was beaten down with injuries and still battled to an 11th place finish at the Section Meet of 20 teams...three runners (Linnea, Lucy and Sydney) even ran personal best times under subpar conditions! The Boys had their sights set high, and although they didn't have the race they envisioned, they still dropped 100 points off of their 2008 team point total and improved to a 9th place finish from 11th place in 2008.

6) When the season was complete, I didn't have to do any second-guessing about the effort of each runner. This is a great group of student-athletes that worked hard all-season long to give the team their best performances.

I also wanted to highlight the team awards given at our Trinity CC banquet, because they are well-deserved and coaches and athletes voted for them. Here they are:

Most Valuable - Boys: Patrick Earhart
Most Dedicated - Boys: Cody Sommer & JonElliott Brubaker
Most Improved - Boys: Charlie Leighton
Spirit Award - Boys: Joe Hrbacek

Most Valuable - Girls: Lotus Schifsky
Most Dedicated - Girls: Rebecca Driessen
Most Improved - Girls: Lucy Leighton
Spirit Award - Girls: Theresa Gross & Carmen Quinlivan

Thanks to the parents and families of the cross country runners for hosting events, providing transportation, timing at meets and for your support throughout the season. Our success comes from the family involvement and positive team atmosphere you help provide for the program.

Trinity CC Supper

Hello,

This is just a reminder for Trinity cross country members that we do have a pizza party planned for tomorrow - Monday, November 2nd - at Cossetta's (211 7th Street West St. Paul, MN 55102) from 6:00-7:30pm.

We hope that members of the boys and girls teams can join us in this final event.

The supper is a celebration of attaining some lofty goals set for the Section 4A meet. Of the 10 goals we set for each team, the boys achieved 3 of them and the girls reached 5...both team had solid performances!

Here are directions to Cossetta's from Trinity: take 494 West to 35E North, take 35E North to Kellogg Blvd exit and turn right, take the 2nd right off of Kellogg Blvd to 7th Street West...Cossetta's is at the end of the block on the right.

Let me know if you have any questions.

See you tomorrow night!

Six Characteristics of a Champion Runner

Six Characteristics of a Champion Runner-

1) Confidence - a realistic faith in one's abilities that resists irrational doubts and fears.
- If you lack confidence, you'll be susceptible to underestimating your abilities.
- If you have too much confidence, you'll have an inflated sense of your abilities.

2) Optimism - a general expectation that things will go your way.
A tendency to expect success regardless of your abilities or external circumstances.

3) Focus - the ability to concentrate your attention on the sensory input and information that matters and to ignore everything else.

4) Resilience - having the ability to cope with adversity.
Every runner encounters setbacks. Champion runners are able to minimize the effects of setbacks by not dwelling on them and by having ready practical strategies for dealing with them as they arise.

5) Motivation - the direction and intensity of one's effort.
The desire to run…and the desire to run well.
- Focus on the motivation of team camaraderie. Racing and giving your best effort to represent excellence for the team and school.

6) Discipline - the ability to stick to a plan regardless of internal and external challenges.
-

The most important psychological fact of racing = racing isn’t especially fun. Racing is hard.

How tough can it be to give your best effort in a Cross Country race?

…from Matt Fitzgerald in The Cutting-Edge Runner:
‘Most races inflict heavy doses of physical pain and emotional suffering. It's a unique kind of misery, sort of like a very slow drowning or a very rapid starvation. The muscles plead for oxygen and glucose. At the same time, they feel as if they are being eaten by acid. It seems your blood is slowly being replaced with tap water. The kicker is that this form of torture is utterly voluntary, hence ridiculous, and so the whole thing is essentially a mind game. You can stop (or slow down) at any time, but of course, the shame of stopping or slowing down is even worse than the agony of continuing.’

The Ultimate Adversity of Running = To Endure Pain and Suffering

How much pain are you willing to endure for a few minutes to achieve the result you desire?

Believing you can accomplish something makes it possible.

Blaine Invitational Results

Hello,

It can be frustrating, for the runners and coaches, to talk about goal times and compare performances from meet to meet and to measure how well we ran. We had a slower course at Blaine than expected, so times won't reflect the effort and progress we have made. That said, I was very pleased with our racing and effort.

As long as we can take care of ourselves over the weekend and come into the MCAA Conference meet on Tuesday healthy, we will be ready to take on the course at Bassett Creek Park.

Here are the Trinity CC results from the Blaine Invitational:

Boys Varsity Results (5000m)-
Trinity Team Time - 1:34:25.3 - 4th place of 16 teams

Parent Assistance for Blaine Invitational

Hello,

This Thursday the Trinity Cross Country team is scheduled to compete at the Blaine Invitational. This is a replacement meet for the Farmington Invitational, a meet which no longer exists.

Upon signing up for this meet, we understood our first race to be at 4:30pm, but that has not proven to be correct. The Boys Varsity race is first at 3:45pm and Girls Varsity is next at 4:05pm.

Trinity will not allow their athletic teams to leave during the school day for competition unless it is a championship (Section or State) event. However, students can be excused at any time with parent approval.

At this point we are looking for parents to send notes with their students to be excused from school at 2:00pm on Thursday so we can leave together as a team for the meet and compete in the varsity races.

We were unable to switch to the large school race at Blaine to eliminate the time issue, because that division is full...and we would rather compete against the other schools our size anyway.

I am sorry that we need your assistance to get the students released from school because of the time crunch, but the alternative was to have no meet this week.

If students are unable to get permission to leave school early on Thursday, we are working to lineup a parent driver for the those runners and the runners in the later middle school races to bring students to the meet once the school day has ended to compete in the Junior High and Junior Varsity races.

Again, I am sorry for the headache involved with getting to this meet. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Tuesday, September 29th - at the old Trinity School site (Evergreen Community Church - 2300 East 88th Street Bloomington, MN) from 3:30-5:30pm.
Wednesday, September 30th - Run On Your Own - option to meet before school at 7:00am with other teammates.

Friday, October 2nd - at Trinity School from 3:30-5:00pm.
Saturday, October 3rd - Willmar Optimist Invitational at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Willmar. The first race starts at 1:00pm, we will be organizing transportation to leave from various locations at 9:30am.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Schedule Changes and Information

Hello,

We have some changes to the Trinity Cross Country schedule because Fall Field Day has been moved from Friday, September 18th to the following week - Friday, September 25th.

Here are the CC events for the rest of this week, with any changes:

Thursday, September 16th - Private School Championships - 4:00pm at St. Catherine University. Come out and cheer us on!
Friday, September 17th - We will now have a short running practice from 3:30-4:45pm. We will get access to the locker rooms for students to shower and cleanup after practice. We then have the Trinity CC Bowling Night at St. Francis Bowling Alley in St. Paul from 6:00-9:00pm. Students will be responsible for their own ride to the bowling alley, but I will have some room in my car, Kim will have room in her van and many students will be driving from school - so just ask if you need a ride. We will have a pizza supper shortly after we arrive at the bowling alley. Please bring $5 for shoe rental and pizza.
Saturday, September 18th - We have practice at Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis. New Trinity students are excused to attend the Study Skills Seminar at Trinity that morning. They are expected to get a long run in on their own.

We will probably still try and plan a special event the following Friday after Field Day rather than a run, but I hope this clears things up for the rest of this week. Sorry for any confusion.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Trinity CC Bowling Night

Hello,

We were planning for Trinity Fall Field Day this Friday and have a team building social event planned. We plan to continue with the event, even with Field Day moving to next Friday, September 25th. We will have a short running practice on Friday after school and then head to St. Paul for bowling.

Event: Trinity CC Bowling Night
Place: St. Francis Church Bowling Alley (426 Osceola Avenue South St. Paul, MN 55102)
Time: 6:00-9:00pm
Cost: $5 to pay for shoe rental and pizza
Directions: From Trinity take 35E North to Randolph Avenue, take Randolph Avenue right (east) to Osceola Avenue and go left (north), the church/bowling alley is one block ahead on the right.

This is a mandatory event, just like a practice. If for some reason you cannot attend, please let me know as soon as possible.

I also understand if parents don't want their kids out so late. Sorry, the 6:00-9:00pm time was the only one available on this night. Students are only required to stay until 8:00pm, so you may pick them up any time after 8:00pm that is most convenient for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse
