State Meet and 2012 Season Wrap-Up

Hello,

This post is long overdue, but I wanted to share some information from the State Meet, recognize runners for team awards, and say thank you.

State Meet Results-
Boys Varsity-
17:33.8 - Joe Berchem (5:19, 5:39, 5:55, :40) - 106th place
(176 total boys runners)

It was the third season in a row that Trinity was participating at the State Meet with an individual or team.  It was an exciting experience for Joe and fun for the rest of the team to be involved and come out to support him at State and in the training leading up to the meet.

It was another great season for both the boys and girls teams. We have another great group of seniors that we are going to miss next year, but there is a solid young nucleus ready to follow their lead and keep some strong traditions going in 2013 and beyond.

Academic All-State-
Both the Trinity Boys and Girls Cross Country teams achieved the highest level of academic all-state honor - Gold Level. This means that the varsity runners listed on the Section 4A roster averaged a GPA level of 3.75 or higher Congratulations to both squads!

Also, Lucy Leighton has earned individual academic all-state honors for the second straight season. If a runner is a junior or senior, places in the top 15 at the Section meet, and has a GPA over 3.75 - they also are recognized as individual academic all-state student-athletes. Congratulations Lucy!

Team Awards-
Our CC banquet seems so long ago now, but on Saturday, November 17th we acknowledged these runners with well-deserved awards:

Boys-
Most Valuable - Joe Berchem
Most Dedicated - Henry Brink
Most Improved - Josiah Sommer
Spirit Award - Henry Croll
Junior High Runner of the Year - Henry Leighton

Girls-
Most Valuable - Lucy Leighton
Most Dedicated - Theresa Mueller & Lotus Schifsky
Most Improved - Grace Ennis
Spirit Award - Claire Mealey
Junior High Runner of the Year - Grace Ennis

Motivation for 2013 Season-
Summer and off-season training is the key for any individual and team success in distance running...and it's no different at Trinity.

Many of you have had a chance to see what an improved summer of training has already done to establish a routine of running, which leads to faster times and better racing.  Let's keep the growth of this cross country program going by each doing our part to improve and have the patience to stick with training!

Every runner should evaluate their own situation and determine what the next step in their training should be to improve - it will be different for everyone based on experience, previous summer training, and age. If you have questions, please ask me...I would be glad to help.

There is no magic method to becoming a better and faster runner, but I can give you some important advice a previous coach of mine imparted on me:

Coach: "Do you know the secret to becoming a better runner? To run. And run some more. And do it often."

Seems simple doesn't it? ...but when the cold winter months or the busy summer months roll around, it gets harder and harder to be diligent in training...to keep the routine and remember that consistency in training is the best way to improve.

Thank you-
I want to say thanks again to the parents and families of the cross country runners for hosting events, providing transportation, timing and working at meets, and for your support and patience throughout the season. It was the biggest challenge yet for coaches with such a large and inexperienced group this year, but it ended up being everything we hoped it could be. Our success comes from your involvement and the positive team atmosphere you help us instill in the program.

We have entered the final week of the cross country season, with Joe Berchem still preparing for the State Meet.

For many runners the official cross country season has ended. Practices are optional for any runners that are not running at the State Meet, but practice is no longer a required commitment. However, it is a great way to extend your training with teammates while we still have great weather!

If any CC runners would like to make the trip, we have a limited number of seats - please let me know as soon as possible. We also plan to eat supper in Northfield before returning to Trinity.
Wednesday, October 31st - Run On Your Own - option to run at 7:00am at Trinity School

Section 4A Meet Results

Hello,

We had some cold, rain, and wind at Battle Creek Park for the Section 4A Meet, but the Tri-Hawk runners gave a great effort today and turned in some season best performances even with the blustery weather conditions.

I know our girls team had bigger expectations, but we ran up against a couple of Blake and Minnehaha Academy teams that ran very well today to deserve their trips to State.

Congratulations to Joe Berchem for earning a trip to the State Meet next weekend with his 14th place finish...and to Kim Kelly-Sommer for being named girls assistant coach of the year for Section 4A!

Running Nowhere Fast

by Jesse Schoen

Theresa Mueller quickly covers the final quarter-mile stretch of the Private School Championships cross country course in St. Paul with a smooth and efficient stride.  She zooms through the finish line to complete her first-ever 4000-meter cross country race with an outstanding time and nearly two minutes ahead of the second place runner.  The problem is that Theresa's convincing performance was in the junior varsity race, while her teammates and daily training partners were preparing to run in the upcoming varsity race.

Theresa is a sophomore student at Trinity School at River Ridge, a recent transfer from St. Agnes, and a first-year cross country runner.  According to the Minnesota State High School League transfer rule, Theresa is not allowed to compete at the varsity level at her new school for one year in any sport.

The transfer rule was revamped in 2007 with a more stringent set of rules to keep students from school hopping for athletics, to eliminate "all-star" teams from forming at powerhouse athletic programs in specific sports, and to try to keep integrity and fairness of competition and sport.

Most students that transfer to a new school have the option to participate at the varsity level at their previous school for that one-year eligibility period, but St. Agnes has never offered cross country as a sport, so Theresa is out of options to compete as a varsity runner in 2012.

“I guess I thought the transfer rule only applied for students that had already participated previously in a sport,” said Theresa.

When she received the news that she would be ineligible for the 2012 cross country season at the varsity level, it was a difficult time for Theresa.  “I was angry and sad.  I thought, ‘What’s the point?’  Maybe I should wait until next year to run cross country if it doesn’t matter, but I realized that the training would help for the future.”

The lack of varsity competition hasn't seemed to slow Theresa down, as she is able to practice with the top Trinity runners each day and has quickly established herself as a leader and distance-running force in workouts.

Because of the grade-level race format at the Milaca Mega Meet last weekend, Theresa was able to run against some better competition and she gave everyone a glimpse of what she can do when pushed in a race.  Theresa took the lead of the sophomore race at the halfway point with a strong uphill surge on a winding path and kept building her lead to win by more than 20 seconds.

Theresa Mueller at the Milaca Mega Meet as the Girls Sophomore race champion

While Theresa won't be able to officially contribute to the team score this season, Trinity coaches are convinced she has already made an impact. “She raises the level of all of her teammates as she attacks each workout, pushing our top runners to run faster and motivating our younger runners to find their limits,” said assistant coach Kim Kelly-Sommer.

The thought of waiting until 2013 to race against top competition and try to earn a trip to the State Meet is discouraging for Theresa, but she is trying to focus on the positives.  “I am still able to practice and participate in a sport that I love.  My teammates push me to be better and have made cross country fun to come to practice each day.”

We will have a short practice (3:30-5:00pm) on Friday following school. We will then transport students to the Leighton house just a few miles away for supper.

Parents just need to be available to pickup students from the Leighton house (...directions listed below) at 7:30pm...we will coordinate rides to the Leighton house following practice.

Event: Spaghetti Supper at Leighton's house
Date: Friday, September 21st
Time: 5:30ish-7:30pm
What to Bring: Any game that you want to play with teammates

Spaghetti with tomato sauce (with meat or vegetarian)
Baked penne with vegetables (some dairy but lowfat)
Alternate option: Gluten-free pasta and sauce

The Leightons have insisted that there is no cost for students for this pre-meet supper.

We do understand that there are some class parties also on Friday, so please be sure to have students let me know if they cannot attend the supper at Leightons.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Feed My Starving Children Event

Hello,

Thanks to all families for being willing to contribute to this event. We are still interested in adding any parents that would like to come and volunteer with us after fall field day.

If you would like to come and join us for the event, please let me know. It would be great to have a few more adults with this large group and it should be a fun time working for a great cause.

One thing to note is that students will need to be driven from the Lexington-Diffley complex at 2:00pm rather than Trinity School.

Here are the details:

Drivers: Ryan (10), Bodette (7), Maunu (6), Viltoft (3), Kranz (4), True (3), Sommer (4), Jesse Schoen (3), Lisa Schoen (6)

Directions:
From Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex to FMSC - turn left onto Lexington Avenue and go north for 3 miles, turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east, pass Neil Armstrong Blvd and then take the first right into the industrial area and go to the far east side of the business building straight ahead.

From FMSC to Trinity - turn right onto Lone Oak Road going east from the FMSC parking lot, take that to Dodd Road and go north (take a left), stay right on Dodd Road through the 55/149 split, turn right (east) onto O'Neill Drive, take that about one mile to Trinity.

Adult Workers: Jesse Schoen, Kim Kelly-Sommer, Lisa Schoen, Sylvia Ryan, Barb Bodette, Karen Maunu, Anne Viltoft, BJ Kranz, Sandra True
(If you are driving for the event, we are expecting you to help be an adult chaperon for food packing...please let me know if that will not work out for you.)

Schedule:

1 - Arrive at the Trinity Fall Field Day site (Lexington-Diffley Athletic Complex in Eagan) at 1:45pm. We will meet in the parking lot to the south of the athletic fields off Lexington Avenue.

2 - Fall Field Day ends at 2:00pm, we will drive students to the Feed My Starving Children location (990 Lone Oak Road, Suite 160 Eagan, MN).

3 - Participate in the 2:30-4:30pm training and work shift with the cross country team.

4 - A quick meet recap from the Private School Championships outside FMSC.

5 - Transport students back to Trinity after the meet recap...leaving FMSC at roughly 5:00pm, to be at Trinity by 5:30pm.

If fall field day is moved indoors at Trinity School, we would then transport students from Trinity to Feed My Starving Children at the same times listed.

If fall field day is cancelled, we will have a normal cross country practice at Trinity School from 3:30-5:30pm as we would not be able to make the 2:30pm start time needed to participate at Feed My Starving Children.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jesse

Trinity CC - Week Five Schedule

Hello,

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our first meet of the season on Saturday.  The effort and competitive spirit of the Tri-Hawk runners was exceptional.  I am excited to see the development of these runners as the season progresses.

We have a busy week ahead with a meet, a special event following Fall Field Day, and a run on Saturday morning at Minnehaha Falls.
